If you eat alkaline food with acid what happens to the alkalinity of the food?

Intuitively, it stands to reason that the acid neutralizes the alkalinity. But it can get pretty complicated, depending on the acid forming food involved. Young cites examples in which the acid in, say, a cup of coffee takes just a whole bunch of alkaline to neutralize.
